Synopsis
Face to face (Nerkku Ner) is a play set in Northern Kerala, home to the ritual form of worship, Theyyam – in which the performer transcends reality to become the Gods and Goddesses that protect the village. Muchilottu Bhagavthy is a powerful Theyyam Goddess. In her sacred grove, she has to now deal with a new opponent – a shadow from her past – a burnt body of a woman. Will she be able to make peace with her past? Meanwhile in the human world, Suresh a Theyyam artist, is fighting his bad health to prepare for what could be one of his last theyyam performances. Will faith help him endure the performance? His daughter Smitha has been suffering sleepless nights ever since she heard her sister – Malini and her husband Krishnan are coming home. Nightmares haunt her as her parents, Janaki and Suresh prepare for a feast to welcome the couple. What is disturbing Smitha that she cannot confide in her family and why? The play grapples with questions such as - What stories are told and not told? What does it take to tell a story? What does it mean to be a Goddess? What is sacred?
