Synopsis

'Addendum' is part of 'In Memoriam', a double bill comprising 'Addendum' and 'Corrigendum'. The ‘liberated economy’ of developing countries has had compromises in many different ways, especially with respect to human rights. The concept of ‘development’ has steadily got equated with making more money. This pursuit has decorously been termed economic growth. The natural resources available for growth are finite, but the goals of growth are infinite. In a lot of the aspirations of growth the most sought after resource is land. It is seen in a glaringly massive scale in the displacement of indigenous peoples for large development projects, for mining, dams, large manufacturing complexes, the benefits of which reach people other than the displaced. Displacement – and the resultant migration – is recognized widely as one the foremost hurdles in achieving Sustainable Development Goals proposed by the United Nations. It is also known that the acquisition of land and other needed resources is achieved through a blatant combination of political maneuvering and brute force. The game of development is not played on a level playing field. It is no different in the microcosm of the city. Land assets here are even more precious than gold reserves. The acquisition of land for one aspiration or the other is often by means that are located in a parallel system of enforcement. The beneficiaries do not get their hands dirty. There are ready service providers. It can get violent.
