Synopsis
Cold Gold is a women-oriented, psychological thriller. The play is about a partnership between two dissimilar women: Devika, a south Mumbai journalist and Vidya, a housemaid. The duo are ‘crooks in good books’ – faced with temptation, they literally begin to believe in the clichéd slogan, ‘India shining’. The jewelry, stolen by Vidya, is shared between the two women, through a game of dice! Bada Idly, a gangster and Vidya’s boyfriend, is bent on getting his stolen jewels back. Vidya has entered Devika’s house on the pretext of looking after the aged mother-in-law, an actress consumed by age but still very flamboyant. As the story unfolds in flashbacks, Devika soon discovers the hidden jewels and traps Vidya into sharing them. Kamini, the mother-in-law, enters the scene and wants a piece of the action. We finally see a plot where even the police become participants in the game – there is a see-saw of ups and downs and, in every scene, fortunes are reversed. All the characters operate in their own shrewd ways, but when Bada Idly makes a sudden appearance in the middle of the night; all three are reduced to nervous wrecks. Who will emerge as the winner? Will the three women be able to stand up against the tension & violence? The final closure reveals that most of Mumbai mullah is stolen and the rich and poor are both in it together. As thrillers go, this one enters deep levels of human behavior to reveal complex motives and hidden agendas. It also reveals the sleazy & corrupt life of Mumbai.
