Synopsis
This play solves all the main mysteries that have surrounded the figure of Shakespeare: who he was; what he did during the seven ‘lost years’; whether Bacon did write Shakespeare; who the ‘dark lady of the sonnets’ was; why Shakespeare dedicated some sonnets to Mr. W.H., and what was their relationship; whether he ever studied in Europe and whether he was a closet Catholic; what was the ‘School of Night’; what Giordano Bruno did in 1583; who Lady Mary, the Countess of Pembroke, really was; and above all, why so little is known of England’s greatest playwright. Incidentally, the play also solves the mystery of the ‘Persian Lady’, and whether she was Queen Elizabeth, or the Countess of Essex; and what happened to the Emperor Jehangir’s lost love; and what were the origins of Giambattista della Porta’s ‘Natural Magic’. Despite such successes, it leaves a few more new mysteries with the theatre-goer, such as the real identity of King Charles I, and whether Shakespeare can be credited with the philosophy found in The Leviathan. Perhaps, the point of this grave farce is that the theories it puts forward cannot be disproved, any more than those of serious academicians.
