Synopsis

The play is set in south Mumbai. The narrative begins with the final rites of Pushpa Vaswani, a suppressed life who waited till death to make the last act of defiance. She wills her spacious, posh flat in Worli to Chandrika Kamble, a street flower vendor, rather than her family. Everyone is shocked – her husband & son decide to contest the will in court. However, Shalini, the daughter, supports the mother’s decision. A conflict builds up: and the question is raised – did Mrs. Vaswani have the legal right to will the flat to a phoolwali? Needless to say, Chandrika and her husband, Baban, are overjoyed at their good luck! Celebrations follow in lively scenes on the street corner (multi-lingual songs in English/Hindi/Marathi). As the ten-day death ceremony is being held, Shalini talks to the rather comic priest who observes the whole drama that is taking place in the Vaswani household. She also consults her lawyer friend, Veena, who informs her of women’s property rights. Then, suddenly on the 5 th day of the death ceremony, Mohan comes to her room and drops the keys of the flat. He tells her that he & dad have decided not to contest the will and Shalini can keep the 5 crore flat for herself! Or give it to Chandrika, if she so desires. What will be Shalini’s decision be? Is Chandrika’s husband ready to let go of the flat? In a rather strange twist, we find that the characters even surprise themselves with unexpected emotional decisions.
