Synopsis

The Playwright is Dead is a search for the authentic voice of a playwright who is a woman, and deeply affected by the dearth of interesting and real women on stage. At 17, she is trying to emulate Edward Albee; by 21, she is obsessed with the elusive idea of metaphor; and by 30 it seems that her politics and questions debilitate her. She discovers that her concerns are exhausting: Which stories are important? Who are the women she must write about? Where is ‘her’ theatre located? Physically consumed by this act of constant making, she finds herself in the midst of awkward conversations with partners; intense encounters with her characters, and a feeling that perhaps stories do consume you if you let them. The play examines the nature of creation itself, especially in the theatre -- choices, representation and the inevitably contrived nature of it all.
